Baseball improves to 3-2 with doubleheader sweep of Waynesburg College

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Juniata College baseball improved to 3-2 overall with a doubleheader sweep of Waynesburg College, 9-6 and 6-4, Tuesday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Field.

In game one, Juniata scored four runs in both the third and fifth innings in the come-from-behind victory.

John Martinez (Mount Union, Pa./Mount Union) went 3-for-4, all singles, with two runs batted in to lead the Eagles at the plate, while Russel Gray (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) and Joe Sforza (Pittstown, N.J./Immaculata) were each 2-for-4. Bradley Medellin (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) also had a pair of RBI in a 1-for-3 effort at the plate.

Will Hoffman (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) got the start for the Eagles, scattering six runs, four earned, on six hits in five complete innings of work.  Nate Burkey (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) pitched two innings of no-hit ball in relief to earn the save. 

Medellin and Dan Gray (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) provided the offensive spark for the Eagles in game two. Gray was 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI, while Medellin went 2-for-3. Each scored twice to aid the Juniata cause.

Juniata scored three runs in the top of the seventh to gain the win, breaking what had been a 3-3 tie after six complete.

Zachary Sauble (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) allowed three runs on six hits over five-and-a-third innings in the no-decision start, striking out three and allowing no walks.  Ben Sealy (Seneca Falls, N.Y./Mynderse Academy) came on in the sixth to pitch the final one-and-two-thirds innings, allowing one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts on his way to the win. 

Juniata is off on Wednesday, but returns to action on Thursday, March 10, when it faces Gwynedd Mercy College in a single nine-inning contest.
