HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Juniata College baseball team charged back into the Landmark Conference playoff race with a three game sweep over the United States Merchant Marine Academy this past weekend. Leading the way for the offense was Andrew Kriss (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll). For his efforts, he was named the Landmark Player of the Week for the week ending April 18.
During the week, Kriss totaled 14 hits, upping his conference best to 55 on the season. Five of those hits went for a double, and he also crossed the plate six times and knocked home six runners. He batted .583 (14 for 24), with a .600 on-base percentage.
His week finished strong, hitting safely in four of his six plate appearances on Sunday, in the Eagles 14-12 come from behind win. He had three RBI's and also scored twice to help lead the Eagles.
He had at least two hits in four of the five games, and hit safely in all five to extend his current hitting streak to 16 games.
In addition to leading the conference in hits, his .482 batting average on the season is second in the Landmark against batters who have been to the plate 50 or more times. He is also fourth in the conference in runs scored, reaching home on 31 different occasions
The Eagles went 4-1 during the week, including a nonconference victory over Penn State Altoona.
They started the week 1-1, beating the Lions 13-9 before losing 16-3 at home versus Elizabethtown College. But the three-game sweep over the Mariners put the Eagles in a tie for fourth place with Susquehanna.
The Crusaders come to Huntingdon this weekend for a crucial series starting on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
