Deschenes, Schmidt, Grim, and Parker named to Landmark Fall All-Academic Team

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Four Juniata College student-athletes were among those named to the Landmark Conference 2011 Fall All-Academic Team, which was announced Wednesday.

Juniata’s Fall 2011 All-Academic team selections are Shauna Deschenes (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita), Amanda Schmidt (Boswell, Pa./North Star), David Grim (Boalsburg, Pa./State College Area), and Ceth Parker (Sabillasville, Md./Catoctin).

Deschenes, a forward on the Juniata field hockey team, finished second on the team in scoring this season with 18 points, tallying six goals and six assists including a pair of goals versus Randolph-Macon. She finished her Juniata career with 24 goals and 13 assists for 61 points, placing her among the top ten on Juniata’s all-time career points leaderboard. A three-time Landmark Academic Honor Roll selection, she earned a spot on the Dean’s List in Spring 2009. Outside of field hockey, the biology student volunteers with the Huntingdon County Humane Society as a member of the Pets and Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).

Schmidt, a senior middle hitter for the Juniata women’s volleyball team, was third on the team in total kills this season with 197. A Second team All-Landmark Conference selection in 2010 and the Most Outstanding Player of the 2009 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, Schmidt finished her career with 659 total kills and 174 total blocks while averaging 2.45 points per set over her four years. A three-time Landmark Academic Honor Roll selection and six-time Dean’s List student, Schmidt is active with the Juniata Activities Board and the Somerset County Humane Society. The communications and digital media student is also interning with Juniata’s Alumni Relations office this fall.

Grim, a midfielder on the Juniata men’s soccer team, is a two-time Landmark All-Academic Team honoree after previously earning the award in Fall 2009. He completed his four seasons in Blue and Gold with 26 points, logging nine goals and eight assists – including two goals and one assist during his senior campaign. A three-time Landmark Academic Honor Roll selection and five-time Dean’s List student, he earned ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-District honors in 2010. A politics student, Grim is extremely involved in community and civic affairs both at Juniata and his hometown of Boalsburg, Pa.; he is a student representative on the Juniata College Board of Trustees and its Enrollment & Retention and Honorary Degree committees.

Ceth Parker, a senior member of the Juniata cross country and track & field teams, is earning a repeat selection for Landmark All-Academic Team honors; he previously was named to the Spring 2011 All-Academic Team as a member of the outdoor track & field team. He has been an All-Region and All-Landmark performer in cross country, and was the 2010 Juniata cross country most valuable performer. A seven-time Landmark Academic Honor Roll student in biology, Parker is a member of the Beta Beta Beta biology honor society and placed second in the molecular biology poster competition at the 2011 Allegheny Branch of the American Society for Microbiology.

Two male and two female student-athletes from each of the eight Landmark institutions are selected for the Landmark Conference All-Academic Team, which honors athletes who have excelled academically and athletically.  Nominees may come from any of the Landmark fall sports, and must have sophomore standing or higher with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better.  The Landmark Conference will select an All-Academic team for each of the three athletics seasons during the year.
